HBO confirmed Wednesday that the Bohemian Rhapsody actress Lucy Boynton has been cast as Lady Rohanne Webber, known in George R.R. Martin’s source material as the Red Widow, in Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the Game of Thrones prequel series currently in production.
Two additional cast members were announced alongside Boynton: Babou Ceesay (Alien: Earth) as Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield, and Peter Mullan (Westworld) as Ser Eustace Osgrey of Standfast.
Who Is Lucy Boynton?
Boynton, 32, is a British-American actress who broke through internationally playing Mary Austin, Freddie Mercury’s longtime companion, opposite Rami Malek in the 2018 biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
The film grossed over $900 million worldwide and won four Academy Awards.
Since then she has appeared in Murder on the Orient Express, the Netflix series The Politician as Astrid Sloan, and most recently starred in A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story.
She also had a cameo in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie as Proust Barbie. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms marks her first entry into the Game of Thrones universe.
Fans had been hoping for exactly this casting. When Boynton’s name began circulating in rumors weeks before the official announcement, Reddit lit up with support.
“They’d probably have to give her a wig to fit Rohanne’s long braid, but her face is perfect,” one user wrote.
Another simply said: “Lucy Boynton as Rohanne Webber looks so good.” The official confirmation Wednesday delivered exactly what fans wanted.
Who Is Lady Rohanne Webber?
Lady Rohanne Webber is one of the most compelling figures in Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, the short story collection the show adapts.
She is the Lady of Coldmoat and head of House Webber, set roughly 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones during the reign of King Aerys I Targaryen.
She earned the nickname the Red Widow through circumstances surrounding the deaths of multiple husbands, details the show will inevitably explore.
In the source material she is shrewd, politically dangerous, and fiercely independent.
But there is another layer to Rohanne that makes her one of Martin’s most fascinating creations: she is the future wife of Gerold Lannister and the grandmother of Tywin Lannister, making her a direct ancestor of one of Game of Thrones’ most iconic figures.
Her storyline in Season 2 puts her directly at odds with Ser Duncan the Tall.
A devastating drought threatens the stream supplying water to Ser Eustace Osgrey’s land at Standfast, and Rohanne fights tooth and nail to control those water rights.
The feud escalates when Ser Bennis, a knight in Osgrey’s service, cuts the face of one of Rohanne’s servants, setting off a chain of events that culminates in a savage trial by combat, with Dunk facing Rohanne’s champion fighter, Ser Lucas Longinch. Dunk and Rohanne also develop feelings for each other along the way.
Showrunner Ira Parker has called The Sworn Sword — the novella Season 2 adapts — his “favorite” of the Dunk and Egg stories, largely because of Rohanne.
“I can’t say much, but we have three absolutely brilliant actors coming in to do these roles,” Parker said ahead of the announcement.
What Is A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms?
The series premiered on HBO January 18, 2026, earning a 94% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
It centers on Ser Duncan the Tall, played by Peter Claffey, and his squire Aegon “Egg” Targaryen, played by Dexter Sol Ansell, who is secretly a Targaryen prince.
Season 1 adapted The Hedge Knight, the first Dunk and Egg novella. The Season 1 finale aired February 22, just ten days ago.
Season 2 was already in production by the time Season 1 premiered, with filming underway in Belfast and Spain.
HBO has committed to the franchise through 2028, with Seasons 2 and 3 filmed back-to-back to ensure a new season every year.
Season 2 is expected to premiere in 2027. House of the Dragon Season 3 is also set for HBO in June 2026, making this a massive year for the Game of Thrones universe.
For fans who have read the Dunk and Egg stories, Boynton’s casting is a major moment.
