Duncan Sheik Is In Critical Condition
Duncan Sheik's family posted a statement to his Instagram Wednesday night confirming what his social media posts had quietly been hinting at since late August: the Grammy-nominated singer and Tony Award-winning Broadway composer is in the hospital in New York City, and his condition is serious.
"Duncan is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition," the statement read. "Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time." The family asked for privacy and said updates would come when appropriate.
Sheik had been posting from the hospital on his own Instagram since at least August 20, writing "I would prefer to be home making music. But a bit of reflection is not too bad" and later "Sorry for the selfies, but I am still bored in hospital." He gave no indication of what was wrong.
The timing is particularly difficult. Two major Off-Broadway productions featuring his work are scheduled this fall, Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, starring Sophia Anne Caruso, begins previews September 25, and a new revival of Spring Awakening opens in December.
He wrote the music for Spring Awakening alongside Steven Sater's lyrics, it won two Tony Awards including Best Musical in 2007 and ran 859 Broadway performances. He is also the composer behind American Psycho on Broadway.
Before Broadway, Sheik had the 1996 hit Barely Breathing, a Grammy nominee for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance that reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 55 weeks on the Adult Top 40.
