Ethan Salas Hits His First Two MLB Home Runs Wednesday
Ethan Salas had been hitless in his first 15 major league at-bats. That changed Sunday with a triple. Wednesday night in Denver it changed dramatically.
The 20-year-old Padres catcher, born June 1, 2006, in Kissimmee, Florida, and rated San Diego's top prospect, hit both of his first two career home runs in the same game against the Colorado Rockies, becoming the youngest catcher in MLB history with a multi-homer game.
He was 20 years and 107 days old. The record he broke belonged to Butch Wynegar, who was 20 years and 192 days when he did it for Minnesota in 1976.
His first came leading off the second inning, a first-pitch solo shot 426 feet to center off Mason Adams. His second came in the fifth, a two-run blast off Nick Frasso that stretched the lead to 8-1. He drove in three runs total. The Padres won 9-3.
The first home run also made him the youngest catcher to homer in the majors since Hall of Famer Iván Rodríguez did it at 19 years old in 1991.
Salas signed with the Padres in January 2023 for a $5.6 million international bonus, the largest for a catcher at the time. He made his MLB debut September 2. This was his ninth big league game.
