The Week's Winners & Losers
Casino CareThe mother of a cancer-stricken boy who solicited funds for his care pled guilty in State Supreme Court on Sept. 14 to fraud after gambling away almost $15,000 in benefit money at several Niagara Falls casinos. With healthcare costs today, you can kinda see her point. You gotta spend money to make it. |
Alternative EnergyAccording to inside info from State Sen. George Maziarz on Sept. 15, the New York PowerAuthority has shelved plans for a $1 billion 150 turbine wind farm on Lake Erie, the first fresh water project of its kind. News of the cancellation came the same day NYPA announced plans for a new windfarm off Long Island. |
Grey DawnIn the wake of a deadly car crash into an Amherst restaurant that claimed two lives on Sept. 17, there were two more incidents of cars accidentally running into buildings. The average age of the drivers in all three accidents: 69. Think it might be time to start testing our older, er, more advanced drivers? |
Fantastic FinishesAfter going down 21-3 at halftime, the Buffalo Bills stormed back against the Oakland Raiders on Sept. 18, ultimately winning 38-35 in dramatic last-minute fashion. The Bills are now 2-0 for the first time since 2008 and have finally given fans a reason for optimism and should tide us all over until hockey season starts. |
It Never Got BetterA 14-year-old Williamsville boy who had posted an “It Gets Better” YouTube message of support to LGBT kids struggling with bullying, tragically ended his life on Sept. 18, allegedly due to harassment from homophobic classmates. You know, it’s shit like this that make me ashamed to live on this planet. |
By the numbers...

Years Angie Jenkins of Michigan will spend in prison after being sentenced on Sept. 15 for using the Internet to travel across state lines to have sexual relations with a 15-year-old Williamsville boy she met through the online video game World of Warcraft. The 34-year-old mother of two was also convicted of receiving child pornography. |

Millions of dollars left to UB Medical School by an anonymous donor, by far the largest private gift received by the university in its history.
