Hamilton is so deeply in the shadow of gigantic nearby Toronto that nobody outside the neighborhood knows that it exists. But Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and other Rust Belt cities should sit up and take notice because Hamilton, with its 500,000 or so souls, is walking through some policy changes that have a special resonance in cities that are not likely to become international megacities like Toronto.

In the autumn of 2011, life on earth continues to be assaulted by and exposed to a wide variety of man-made toxins. The Safe Chemicals Act of 2011 languishes before an inept and hostile Congress.

The thrill and spectacle of The Lion King, at Shea’s through the end of October, can only be as exciting as the performers charged to sustain it, night after night. Even among member of a strong cast, when Syndee Winters took to the stage as Nala, I sat up and took notice.

It’s a typical weeknight, and a Tennessee couple welcomes several guests into their warehouse-turned-home for a night dedicated to the blues. Soon their spacious living room—frequently used as a Memphis entertainment venue—is bumpin’. Live musicians and studio musicians are doing a sound check, while in walk blues legends Allen Toussaint, Tracy Nelson, and Jonny Lang, all invited to perform by the party host and musical icon herself, Cyndi Lauper.

Beginning Friday October 21, Ladybug Technologies, a Canadian startup which markets itself as a “social technology” firm, will launch its’ first American-based SipSmart breathalyzer machine at Caputi’s Pub in Tonawanda. The stylish in-bar kiosks—which have previously been installed at a bar in Hamilton, Ont.—are part of a pilot program that allows users to track their blood alcohol content and accurately gauge whether they are sober enough to comply with local drinking and driving laws.

No gas pains, but your bladder may suffer on long trips from the lack of pit stops needed while driving the new Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. Ford is advertising 700 city miles to a tank of gas.

London Fashion Week usually brings forth a shock or two from cutting-edge designers, but a September creation by Rachel Freire might have raised the bar: a floor-length dress made from 3,000 cow nipples (designed to resemble roses).

I have four siblings. Sadly, we have lost both of our parents, most recently our father. We are all grown and we all live in different states. Needless to say, cleaning out the house and settling the estate has been emotionally difficult, but we are almost through it. Everything was evenly divided among us.
