It's Fat Tuesday, Mes Chéries!

17th annual Artvoice Mardi Gras Party prepares to rule the world

Next year the Artvoice Mardi Gras party will be old enough to vote. Imagine what that will mean. Just ask yourself: Who will Fat Tuesday vote for?

You can bet that Fat Tuesday will vote for candidates who believe in public funding for the arts. (That’s why Fat Tuesday, for the second year running, is supporting Give for Greatness, the campaign to raise money for the region’s arts and cultural institutions.) And any politician who wants Fat Tuesday’s vote better give some love to Hospice, too. (The long-time beneficiary of the Artvoice Mardi Gras Party, Hospice will receive all the cash collected at the doors of participating venues on Chippewa.)

You can be sure that when Fat Tuesday goes to the polls, it won’t care about Democrats or Republicans. No, Fat Tuesday is a whole different kind of party.

Fat Tuesday is not libertarian; it’s libertine. It’s not laissez faire; it’s laissez les bons temps rouler. Fat Tuesday is a deciated post-partisan, inasmuch as the after-party typically lasts until sunup.

The Artvoice Mardi Gras Party has stood on the same platform for 17 years now: At any participating venue, pay $5 at the door for a yellow bracelet, which grants access to all other venues and entitles you to a festoon of colorful beads wherever you go. There are live music and dance performances, DJs, food and drink specials, traveling drag queens, and a fantastic parade that kicks off at 5pm and winds through the city. Every dime of your $5 goes to a good cause.
