In the two years since he returned to Buffalo, Max Collins has made his mark across the region with a series of large-scale, wheat-pasted public murals; he has also exhibited his portrait photography in local galleries to great praise. Ian De Beer is a former graffiti writer (“Hert”) making the interesting (and sometimes perplexing) transition into “fine” art, with all its institutions and suppositions. If you frequent clubs on Allen Street, you’ll have seen his tribute to the late underground comix artist Spain Rodriguez across from Allen Street Hardware, created under the auspices of the Allen St. Street Art Collective, with the sponsorship of restaurateur Mark Goldman.

De Beer and Collins will give a talk this Friday, December 13 (6:30-8pm) at the Burchfield Penney Art Center on street art—and whatever one may think that phrase describes—as well as the work they do individually and collaboratively. (Their collaborations include the poster above, a nod to artist Christopher Wool.) The event will also include a screening of filmmaker Nate Peracinny’s “Streets of Art,” a short documentary about the Allen Street mural project of which the Spain Rodriguez tribute was a part.

These are two of the more dynamic voices on Buffalo’s art scene today. Come hear them, argue with them, what have you—it’s sure to be a good time. The talk will be moderated by Burchfield curator Scott Propeack.
