BOOM!

Round 2, Week 1: The Broadcast vs. The Nepenthe

CONGRATULATIONS to Peanut Brittle Satellite! You collected the most votes at the packed-house live BOOM final at Nietzsche’s on December 26. That’s why you’re now going into Audio Magic recording studio to lay down some tracks. Special thanks go out to runners-up The Manics, A Hotel Nourishing, and Kryszt. You all have a great sound that moves a lot of people, if the swollen ballot box is any indication. You all made it a great night.

Comparing the Two Winter Classics

by Andrew Kulyk & Peter Farrell

Did you watch the Winter Classic on New Year’s Day? If you did, you certainly were not alone. According to television ratings reports, the Buffalo market had a 20 share, and that was the third highest viewership of any city, trailing only the two participant cities Chicago and Detroit. Those who did watch were treated to all the pageantry and excitement that Buffalo fans experienced here just a year ago.

Gone With the Wind

by Dave Staba

As the first quarter turned to the second on December 28, those among the masses packing Ralph Wilson Stadium despite a cruelly meaningless game and a torrential wind storm who happened to turn their attention to the enormous video board above the eastern end zone were treated to an interesting advertisement.

Framed

Max Bill

by Dean Brownrout

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the important 1974 “Max Bill” exhibition mounted by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. The show encompassed 50 years of the Swiss-born artist’s work. It was the first major museum retrospective for Bill in this country. Once again the Albright-Knox found acclaim on the national stage.

Food For Thought

On Viscosity

by Joe George

I have been inquisitive my entire life. This is not a braggart’s proclamation; on the contrary, I wish I could simply take things as they’re handed to me. But no, I always have to question; I like to know the reasoning behind something, but more importantly I like to know how things work.

Events

See You There!

Artvoice's weekly round-up of events to watch out for the week, including our editor's pick for the week: The Buffalo Sugar City Gallery Opening, on Friday January 9th.

Theater News

Stagefright

by Javier

TV and movie star Jeffrey Donovan is currently in Chicago (through January 11) appearing in the sex farce Don’t Dress for Dinner at the Royal George Theatre. No stranger to the theater, Donovan has appeared on Broadway in An Inspector Calls and A View from the Bridge. He is currently featured in the movie Changeling.

Film Review

Gran Torino

by M. Faust

I doubt that even Clint Eastwood’s most ardent fans (and you can count me as one) had particularly high hopes for Gran Torino. All of the hype was geared up for Changeling, the big-budget prestige picture. If you even knew that there was going to be a second Eastwood movie this year, in theaters barely two months after the Angelina Jolie film, you probably assumed that it was a knockoff Eastwood did during a lull.

News of the Weird

by Chuck Shepherd

Aggressive police questioning of a weak-willed suspect can produce an occasional false confession, but experts now believe that six men in a single case, and four in another, confessed to group crimes they did not commit, even though some described their roles in vivid detail.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): While loitering on a sidewalk outside a nightclub in San Francisco on a September night back in 1994, I found the cover of a booklet lying in the gutter. Written by Marilena Silbey and Paul Ramana Das, it was called “How To Survive Passionate Intimacy with a Dreamy Partner While Making a Fortune on the Path to Enlightenment.”

Advice

Ask Anyone

Problem: on advice of magazine columnists, we put credit cards that were paid off in our freezer—keeping them open for emergency use only. We had one credit card only, which I was constantly reassured had a balance of a few thousand dollars only. One day, I decided to apply for free credit reports and open the bills for once. I discovered this credit card had a $9,000 balance, and four more were in use in my name (the freezer cards).
