Shelley Fabares died Saturday August 22 in Los Angeles following a brief illness. She was 82.
Her family, including her husband of more than 40 years, MAS*H actor Mike Farrell, announced the news. "To her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter and comfort," the family said. No cause of death was given.
Fabares was born in Santa Monica in 1944 and spent nearly a decade as teen America's sweetheart, playing Mary Stone, the daughter of Donna Reed's housewife character, in 275 episodes of The Donna Reed Show on ABC from 1958 to 1966.
The role gave her a built-in audience for her brief music career: "Johnny Angel" reached No. 1 in 1962. She then starred opposite Elvis Presley in three films, Girl Happy, Spinout and Clambake, between 1965 and 1967.
Her second act was equally beloved. She played Christine Armstrong, the TV news anchor love interest and eventual wife of Craig T. Nelson's football coach, in Coach from 1989 to 1997, earning two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress.
She received a liver transplant in 2000 and became a dedicated Alzheimer's advocate after personal experience with the disease. She is survived by Farrell and her stepchildren.
