The world is drowning in corporate fraud, and the problems are probably greatest in rich countries—those with supposedly “good governance.” Poor-country governments probably accept more bribes and commit more offenses, but it is rich countries that host the global companies that carry out the largest offenses.

Part art instillation, part video project, but mostly punk band, New York City’s Transgendered Jesus seems to be a perfect fit for Artists & Models. Led by artist, filmmaker, lead vocalist, and Buffalo native Anne Hanavan, this band of experimental artists is not afraid to push boundaries with their chaotic and spontaneous live show.

Do you remember Neil Simon? Still living, he is arguably the most successful American playwright in history, with a litany of plays, films, and television shows to his credit. There is a Broadway theater named after him.

Back in May 2009, it looked like the Friends of Vienna Sunday afternoon chamber music series had reached the end of its tether. The few remaining organizers involved with the series had reluctantly elected to pull the plug at the end of the series’ 33rd season.

The latest display of an anti-Muslim slogan sign near a recently built mosque in Clarence shows how we Americans have been influenced by actions of a minority of Muslims who have successfully distorted the image of a religion, which in sixth- and seventh-century Arabia was a pioneer in advocating social justice.

In April, Texas state Rep. John Davis of Houston proposed a tax break—aimed at buyers of yachts valued at more than a quarter-million dollars. Davis promised more yacht sales and, through a ripple effect, more jobs if Texas capped the sales tax on yachts at the amount due on a $250,000 vessel—a break of almost $16,000 on a $500,000 boat.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In order to capture the spirit of the landscapes he painted, French artist Claude Monet used to work outside in all kinds of weather. When I look at masterpieces like “Snow at Argenteuil” or “The Magpie, Snow Effect, Outskirts of Honfleur,” I like to imagine he was so engrossed in his work that he barely even registered the bitter chill.

My girlfriend is from the Czech Republic. We hit it off right away, and quickly moved in together. For the past four months we’ve been planning a trip to Prague to visit her parents. We took time off work, bought our plane tickets. We’re supposed to leave next week.
