Editor's Pick: Buffalo's Best Weekly Music Gig - Twang Gang

You don’t have to work very hard to find good live music any night of the week in Western New York. But if it’s Tuesday evening, and you don’t want to work at it at all, head to the Sportsmen’s Tavern (326 Amherst Street) to catch the Twang Gang. The club’s owner, Dwane Hall, has assembled a pickup band comprising some of the region’s finest roots musicians—Jimmy Sweet, Doug Yeomans, Jim Whitford, Randy Bolam—to play covers of classic country songs. Guest artists are encouraged to take the stage to play and sing. The beer is cold. The french fries are uncommonly good. It runs 6-9pm.

Editor's Pick: Hardest-Working Musician - Sonny Baker

I met guitarist/songwriter/singer Sonny Baker at one of his gigs the other day. We started talking and I mentioned that I had seen him perform several times before but couldn’t remember with which band. He named the bands he is currently in: Lazlo Hollyfeld, Wooden Waves, and A Hotel Nourishing. For fans of local music, these are three of the most creative bands Buffalo has seen in a while and Baker has had his hands in each one of them. Impressed by this line up of projects he’s helped create, I shook his hand and told him it was nice to meet him, just as he stepped on stage to perform a set of his own solo acoustic material.
