buffablog's 2nd annual herd fest

As summer officially rolls in this weekend, buffaBLOG’s 2nd annual Herd Fest is set to kick things off starting Thursday, June 18th and going all the until Sunday, June 21st. In a style similar to South by Southwest, the festival will feature 12 showcases in various venues across Allentown and beyond. This year, buffaBLOG has partnered up with Steak & Cake Records, Deep Thinka records, Cool Dad Records, Silo Sessions, Wax Museum Radio, Quiet Country Audio, Harvest Sum Records, Black Dots, ESI Events, and Sugar City to offer a full weekend of music and art from over 40 acts. Plan on popping into venues like Mohawk Place, Nietzche’s, Hardware, Duke’s, Black Dots, and Sugar City to watch some of the area’s best musicians do their thing. For $20, you can purchase a VIP bracelet via herdfest.com that will get you into each venue on all four nights; otherwise, it will be $5 at each venue. You’ll find the complete Herd Fest schedule below including our picks of this year’s must-see acts.

Thursday

MUST SEE! Self-described as Buffalo’s “surf-lake-pop” group, Bryan Johnson & Family combines catchy surf guitar riffs with appealing vocal harmonies that are perfect for the summer vibes you’re looking for.

9:45pm | Attic Abasement
11:00pm | Pleistocene

Johnny Nobody
Friday

HARVEST SUM SHOWCASE @ NIETZSCHE’S
10:00pm | Johnny Nobody

MUST SEE! Here’s a band that sounds like a mix between Sloan, Superdrag, The Beatles, Radiohead and Led Zeppelin. Interesting right? It’s almost as if they made a list of some of rocks most influential bands and decided to draw influences from each of them. Whatever the case may be, it definitely works. Their live shows have been known to be fun and energetic which is only matched by their strong musicianship. You won’t want to miss these guys as they kick off Friday night at Nietzsche’s.

10:45pm | Strange Acres
11:30pm | Bearhunter
12:30am | Applennium
1:30am | Roger Bryan

Dr. Ooo
DEEP THINKA RECORDS SHOWCASE @ DUKE’S
10:00pm | Cove DJ Set
10:30pm | Prime Example
11:15pm | Dr. Ooo

MUST SEE! The only thing you need to know about the buffalo MC Dr. Ooo (aka Drew Hartman), is that he brings the party. He’ll get everyone in the room grooving n’ movin to the flow of rhymes and the rhythm of his hard-hitting beats. We’ll see you on the dance floor for this one.

12:00am | Mad Dukez
12:45am | WZA, Truey V, and Short Moscato

COOL DAD RECORDS SHOWCASE @ HARDWARE CAFE

Lesionread
Saturday Afternoon

STEAK & CAKE RECORDS SHOWCASE @ RECORD THEATRE
1:00pm | Local Onlys
2:00pm | Lesionread

MUST SEE! Shawn Lewis is the mastermind behind what we know of Lesionread. It all started out as an experimental electronic music/performance art project that quickly took on a life of it’s own. In order to fully understand what Lesionread is all about, you just have to see him perform live. The experience is as much of an art piece as it is a musical composition. Make sure you get to Record Theatre a little early for this one.

3:00pm | Red Heat
4:00pm | Zealot
5:00pm | Welks Mice

Boy Scouts
BLACK DOTS RECORDS SHOWCASE @ BLACK DOTS
6:00pm | Boy Scouts

MUST SEE! These girls (yeah, that’s right) have a DIY punk mentality is completely obvious in the music they create. They labeled themselves as “feminist punk” and they don’t give a shit whether you like them or not. Come watch them kick off the night at Black Dots.

7:00pm | Alien Three
7:20pm | Facility Men
8:00pm | Junk Drawer

Saturday Night

American Low
QUIET COUNTRY AUDIO SHOWCASE @ DUKE’S
10:00pm | American Low

MUST SEE! You might recognize their name. The indie/pop/rock band American Low has been on a steady rise throughout Buffalo and continues to impress audiences every time they perform. The lyrics are vulnerable and the guitars drive like hell. If you’re a sucker for 90’s alternative and enjoyed the classic emo songs of the early 2000’s, you’ll love this band.

10:30pm | The Soft Love
11:30pm | The Slums
12:15am | The Naturalists
1:00am | M.A.G.S.

Aircraft

12:00am | Viking Moses
12:45am | Pam Swarts
1:30pm | Aircraft

MUST SEE! This four-piece indie art rock band takes their performances to an entirely different level. This is all thanks to years of experimental drug use combined with a deep interest in the mystical world. Their music will put the nature of reality into perspective and you mind just lose your mind (in a good way, of course.) The songs they play are met with an energetic stage presence that’s highly contagious to everyone in the room.
