Sun of Memphis and The Steam Donkeys

Have you heard the news? There’s good rockin’ the first Friday of every month when local supergroup Sun of Memphis stages its high-energy salute to the music of Elvis Presley at the 6pm Nietzsche’s Happy Hour. This week (June 1), all the King’s men have invited friends the Steam Donkeys (pictured) to share the bill, stretching the concept of “Happy Hour” into “Happy All-nighter.” As Sun of Memphis wraps up, the Donkeys take the stage at 10:30, followed by Red & Roxy, Shakey Stage, and L.Z. Dillon, who’ll keep the party going till the wee hours Saturday morning. That’s rockin’ good news, peanut!

Saffire: The Uppity Blues Women

Saffire “The Uppity Blues Women” are an acoustic threesome who play big, brassy blues. Ann Rabson plays boogie piano and finger-picked guitar, Gaye Adegbalola plays guitar and harmonica and Andra Faye plays bass, guitar, mandolin and fiddle, all of which produces that distinctly ‘uppity’ sound. Each woman is an accomplished vocalist as well, passing songs and solos back and forth during rambunctious onstage performances that have come to define the group. They don’t take directions from anyone, and they will tell you all about it through their daring, opinionated yet wise lyrics, which have already filled six full-length albums on Alligator Records. You won’t want to miss this show on Saturday (June 2) at the Tralf Music Hall. Doors open at 7pm

Romi Mayes

This week’s edition of Nietzsche’s’ “Singer/Songwriter Night” features some out of town visitors making a very special appearance. Canadian folk and bluegrass singer Romi Mayes comes all the way from Winnipeg in Manitoba for the Monday evening performance (on June 4), and she’ll be joined by Texas-based mainstay John Evans for a night of rock, bluegrass, folk and country. The songwriter showcase happens every Monday night at Nietzsche’s from 8:30-10:30pm and is always followed by “Buffalo’s Longest Running Open Mic,” hosted by Michael Meldrum. A sneak preview/house concert with Evans and Mayes takes place the night before (Sunday, June 3), part of the Pan-Amherst Concert Series at 7pm. (See Sunday’s ‘Rock’ listings for more details).

Human and the Other Humans

Human & the Other Humans, a troupe of multi-talented, multi-cultural musicians and characters, comes to Nietzsche’s on Wednesday (June 6), part of the “Breathe” tour. Nomadic singer/songwriter and frontman “Human” is a traveler by nature, prone to increasing his band’s numbers by picking up like-minded musicians in the course of his ‘round the world tours. Serious humanitarian messages are nestled in the funky, folky, world-beat sound, carrying words of awareness and love to a lot of ‘other humans.’ Opening the show is Buffalo Wellness Cooperative founder Laura Jean with friends. The show starts at 9pm

Yellow Delicious

Power pop/rock quartet Yellow Delicious visits Merlin’s next Thursday (June 7) for a 10pm show. Founded by twin brothers Pat and Mike Kostalnik in their hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, Yellow Delicious (YD) blends classic and 80s rock with a definitive nod to 21st Century popular tastes. YD has been fortunate enough to have shared the stage with some of their original influences, having played with retro-rock idols Aerosmith, Cheap Trick and Motley Crue—as well as with the Darkness and Sum 41— at festivals and music conferences throughout the midwest and east coast. Also playing: Solo cross-genre artists Brian Brrrn Mohr and Hunger Anthem.
