Again this year our Best of Buffalo ballots were crowded with votes for great places to eat. For a city its size, Buffalo continues to display an embarrassment of riches when it comes to offering a variety of tastes, thanks in part to the city’s broad ethnic makeup.

Village Beer Merchant
Here you can start your day with a bagel and a great cup of coffee at Spot, enjoy some sushi from Kuni’s, or pasta fasoola at Santesiero’s for lunch, and wind up your evening with curried flavors from the subcontinent at the Star of India.

Or maybe you have a hankering for some peirogis at the Slavic Bazzar on William, near Bailey. Great food, with a wide variety of peirogis, and they’re not even in the top five Polish restaurants, according to our readers. Maybe it’s a Ukrainian thing.

What if you’re too late for breakfast, but too early for lunch? Brunch is big at the Left Bank and Betty’s, with Elmwood staple Cole’s and waterfront favorite Shanghai Red’s also highly favored in our poll. Not to be overlooked is Shango in the University District, with its Big Easy inspired fare.

Barbecue continues to gain fans in this, the home of the chicken wing and beef on weck. Fat Bob’s, Kentucky Greg’s, BW’s, One-Eyed Jack’s and Donnie’s made our top five, while other great joints like Ike and BG’s Rib House landed in our best soul food category, along with newcomer Lagniappes—serving Cajun and creole dishes from a small shop on Allen.

If beef is what’s for dinner, our readers recommend Buffalo Chophouse, E.B. Green’s, Hutch’s, Fiamma, and Black and Blue for a great steak. And if you need some really good soup for your soul, people tell us they favor Brodo, Globe Market, Danny’s, Le Metro, and Café 59.

Buffalo’s also known for its bars, and our readers tell us that Mother’s, Cole’s, Allen Street Hardware, Pearl Street Brewery, and JP Bullfeather’s offer great menus when you find yourself peckish during a night on the town. And if your night starts moving toward morning, upscale Mother’s still stands tall in the category of late-night eats, alongside Louie’s, who also gained favor in the hot dog category with their famous Texas hots.

In fact, compared with other parts of the country, Buffalo is a big sausage town. No missing link in our food chain, readers here give high praise to local producers like Spar’s, Scime’s, Mineo & Sapio, Redlinski, and Johnny’s Meat Market.

Those who prefer vegetarian fare—or “nothing with a face” as the late Linda McCartney used to say—recommend Amy’s Place, Falafel Bar, Betty’s, India Gate, and Tru Teas.

Read on, and bring a hearty appetite when you visit these top five establishments. They’ve all been working to broaden the culinary spectrum beyond the Friday Fish Fry—which is still a very popular category (thank God) dominated this year by Papa Jake’s, Hamlin House, Palladino’s, Wellington Pub, and Charlie O’Brien’s.

Coffee & A Spell

Some people like to load their cups up with sugar and cream; others, like myself, prefer it black—the same way I like my magic. At Coffee & A Spell, you can sit down and have a cup of joe while exploring the mysteries of the tarot right on Delaware Avenue.

The Morning Glory Cafe

Another West Side treasure stowed away in a corner, this place hides behind a dry cleaners at the juncture of West, Porter, and York. There’s a gazebo-like structure out front, where a lucky arrival can snag a seat and enjoy the weather and the beautiful houses in the area. Open for breakfast and lunch, the Morning Glory serves a full coffee selection (espresso, cappucino, latte), and smoothies too. And the baked goods are out of this world. Don’t try to roll in there for a late-nighter’s idea of brunch though. The place closes at 4pm.

Bertha’s Diner

This Hertel Avenue establishment is still very much a hole-in-the-wall 1950s diner, with memorabilia covering the walls, wall-mounted menus at each booth, a checkered floor, and plenty of swivel stools at the counter. They serve some of the best breakfast and lunch food—homemade corned beef hash, soups, meatloaf, and pies in addition to all the standards—at some of the best prices you’ll find in the city.

Kipp’s Restaurant

Drive out Route 400 until it ends at Olean Road in South Wales, and just before the first traffic light, on the left, you’ll find Kipp’s, producer of perfect eggs and the best home fries within 200 miles. Cozy, diverting material hanging on the walls, great early country music playing nonstop.

Best Greek Food

Buffalo has long had a great number of places to fill up on souvlaki and spanakopita, but let’s not forget other mainstays that just missed our top five like the Acropolis on Elmwood, and two located in Kenmore—Plaka Restaurant on Delaware, and Plate-Oh! on Elmwood.

Palace of Dosas

This delicious and cheap restaurant, at the junction of Millersport and Eggert, may offer the only completely vegetarian menu in the region. It is also the most authentically Indian in its flavors, and in the utterly bizarre and inescapable background music.

Best Italian Food

If you like excellent Italian cuisine, you’re cheating yourself if you don’t take advantage of several area restaurants that didn’t make our top five list. Don’t miss out on Hertel Avenue favorites Lombardo’s, Romeo and Juliet’s, and Fillipo’s. Other standouts include Lebro’s in Getzville, and if you’re heading to Lewiston, include reservations to Carmello’s for some imaginative takes on traditional dishes.

Best Fast Food that Screams Buffalo

Steve’s Pig & Ox Roast

It’s fast food in the sense that you order from and pick up your food at the same counter, and the service truly is fast. The food sets it apart, though—juicy roast beef sandwiches, hand-scooped ice cream milkshakes, skin-on curly-Q fries stacked three or four inches high, and a decent selection of bottled beers.

Best Place for a Cheap Date

Romeo’s Bakery Caffé

Owner Vito Semeraro grew up in Italy and brought with him to Buffalo authentic, thin-crust, loaded, European-style pizza and panini, as well as awesome baked goods. Considering that nothing on the menu costs more than about $8, and one pizza is enough to feed a couple, Romeo’s is one of the city’s truly cheap dates.

Best Grilled Cheese Sandwich

The Strykersville Pub

Honestly, I’ve made a study of grilled cheese sandwiches that covers all of Western New York, the Southern Tier between Corning and Manhattan and the state of Pennsylvania west of the Poconos. The Strykersville Pub on Route 78 has the best grilled cheese ever. Order it with onions and ask for mustard on the side.

Best Chicken Wings

Curly’s Bar & Grill

If you seek a healthier alternative to deep-fried Buffalo wings, try the wings at Curly’s on Ridge Road in Lackawanna. They are soaked in a Jamaican jerk marinade, baked in an oven, and grilled to give them a crispy, flavorful skin. Bonus: Curly’s wings are not pre-frozen and are served with homemade blue cheese dressing.
