Here and There

Jim Jarmusch fans, at least those of his early films, will be the most appreciative audience for this slight but appealing urban fairy tale that plays out in two cities. Manhattan is home base for Robert (David Thornton), an aging musician who has withdrawn from everything, beginning with the saxophone he hasn’t played in years. Evicted from his apartment and rapidly getting on the nerves of the one friend who will put up with him (played by Cyndi Lauper, Thornton’s real-life spouse), he accepts an offer from Branko (Branislav Trifunovic), a young Serb émigré. He will pay Robert $5,000 to go to Belgrade and marry Branko’s girlfriend so that she will be able to get into the US.

Of course, things don’t go as planned in either city. Branko loses the van with which he scrounged a living and has to replace it in order to pay off Robert. And while Robert brings his surliness with him, the war-damaged city of Belgrade gets under his skin in the person of Branko’s mother Olga (Serbian star Mirjana Karanovic, reason enough to see the movie). Winner of several major awards at the Tribeca Film Festival, Here and There is a modest film with an appreciation of place and an eye for the little details of life that often go unappreciated.

Here and There is the opening feature at opens a new screening venue, the HD Video Café, located at 5445 Transit Road in Williamsville (a half-mile north of Maple Road). The space incorporates Caffe Crème, a coffeehouse with a menu featuring paninis, breakfast sandwiches, wraps, pizzas and desserts. As it becomes fully operational, plans call for an ongoing slate of art/indie and some repertory films with movies showing every afternoon and evening. Their website is www.hdvideocafe.com.
