Round 4 Week 1: Glass Hero vs. Forewarned

Congratulations to Round 3 Winners, Photos of Wagons

CONGRATULATIONS to Photos of Wagons for bringing in the most votes at our live battle of the bands at Nietzsche’s on January 15. It was a packed house, and all the bands were great, but in the end our democratic contest is based on the tyrrany of the majority, and the number of ballots don’t lie. So hat’s off to P.o.W.! They’ll be joining the Albrights and Hunger Anthem in our upcoming Grand Finale—where one act will win a hefty cash prize and a digital recording package from our friends at Guitar Center.

But first, we need to determine a fourth challenger, a band that must succeed in the fiery crucible of our weekly online contest and then prevail at our next live show, scheduled for February 28 at Nietzsche’s.

For you dear readers who’ve been living under a rock, here’s how our contest works: Bands visit boom.artvoice.com and register by answering a brief questionnaire, like the ones below. They also submit a couple songs and a photo.

From the pile of submissions we receive, two acts are chosen each week, and they appear in the print edition of the paper. To our right, meet Glass Hero and Forewarned. Then, visit boom.artvoice.com (or see below) to sample their music and cast one vote for the group you prefer.

Thus we will continue, each week producing one winner. At the end of four weeks, we have four online winners, who will then square off in our next live showdown, where each audience member will receive one ballot to cast for his or her favorite. At the end of that night, one band emerges victorious and wins a spot in the B.O.O.M. Grand Finale. Past B.O.O.M. Grand Champions include Dali’s Ghost and TypeRelevant.

Bands are encouraged to get out the vote any way they can, short of stuffing the ballot box. Our IT guy has detected such instances in the past, and it’s never been taken lightly. If you’re caught cheating, you can be disqualified. And there’s nowhere to appeal our decision.

Also, musicians, there’s still time to enter B.O.O.M. The exposure alone is worth the entrance fee (which is literally nothing). Visit boom.artvoice.com today, to find out how. Tune in next issue to see who won this week’s match, and who’s up to bat.

When/where did the band form? Glass Hero was formed August 2009 in Buffalo, NY.

Band Members: Claire Fornarola - vocals, guitar / John Galbo - vocals, drums / Aaron Smith - bass, vocals

You might like us if you like: Modest Mouse, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, The Decemberists

Recorded Releases: And/Or EP (Jan 7th, 2010)

Best show you've played: It would have to be our EP release show at Nietzsche's.

Why you should win the Artvoice.com Online Battle of Original Music: We distinctively combine the sounds of recent popular independent music (MGMT, The Decemberists) with the origins of alternative (Pearl Jam, Nirvana). We think the material we have provides a new commentary on and contribution to innovative music, and winning BOOM would give us a great opportunity to share it.

When/where did the band form? September 2008. We're from WNY.

Band Members: Kenny Hawkins - lead guitars / Steve Supparits - vocals, guitars / Lynn Carol Schriver - vocals, keyboards / Andrew Noto - bass / Jesse Miller - drums

You might like us if you like: If you enjoy inspiring melodies, great harmonies, and music reflective of great arena rock bands, then Forewarned is for you! Similar bands: Styx, Yes, Queen, Boston, Heart, Meat Loaf, Rush, ELP, The Eagles

Recorded Releases: We just released a double CD set entitled "The Resurrection of Rock and Roll".

Best show you've played: It would be when his band opened for national recording artist Rick Derringer. It was a great audience and we played our hearts out. Mr. Derringer pulled me aside after our set and said that we were the best opener he had ever seen. He even asked us to go back on and close the show after he finished his set! Rick's manager told me that he had never done that before.

Why you should win the Artvoice.com Online Battle of Original Music: Forewarned excels at live events. As proud as we are of our new CD, nothing compares to our live shows! That's why we're entering the Artvoice BOOM competition. This band really needs to show the people of Western New York what we're capable of on stage.
