Thank you for posting this. I have been eagerly awaiting the US release of this film. I saw it on Sunday, and I encourage everyone to go see it. This is something really special, and it probably won’t be around long.
I’m not sure if I view its limited release in quite as sinister a light as M. Faust. The general moviegoing public still equates animated movies to children’s movies. I saw quite a few elementary-school age children in the theater when I saw it. While there’s nothing in it that’s inappropriate for children, it’s definitely not a film aimed at kids. If it were live-action, it would be a surefire commercial success among adults, but I think the general public won’t quite know what to do with this one.
I also wonder if the subject matter has something to do with it. It’s been more than 70 years since Pearl Harbor, but maybe Americans aren’t quite yet ready for a film whose protagonist designed the deadly “Zero” planes that killed so many of our soldiers.
Who is your pick? The only person I see coming close is John Lasseter, but Miyazaki never directed a Cars 2. Brad Bird?
Apart from directing amazing films, Miyazaki does the bulk of the storyboarding himself and certain keyframes of animation. Apart from the greatest living animator, he may be the single greatest auteur in film history.
