Talk about gender confusion.
In reporting a story this past week about a custody fight over a 17 year old person, born a girl, who wants to be a boy, CNN refers to the teenager in the masculine. Breitbart reports the same story, referring to the same teenager in the feminine.
Breitbart lead: [emphasis mine.] Parents of a 17-year-old girl lost custody of their daughter for opposing her wish for transgender medical treatments.
CNN lead: [emphasis mine.] [A] judge on Friday gave custody of a transgender teen to his grandparents rather than his parents, allowing them to make medical decisions regarding his transition.
Further down in both stories we learn that the teenager’s attorney, Thomas Mellott said his client was forced to attend a Catholic school where the teen had to wear dresses and use the feminine birth name given by the parents of the teen.
In a quote that both media outlets chose to use, we learn that the child’s attorney refers to the teen as ‘he’ which CNN reported as spoken. Brietbart added the letter ‘S’ parenthetically. Breitbart’s reporting of Mellot’s quote reads: [emphasis mine]:
“’It caused additional trauma and anxiety,’ Mellott said. ‘When you lack all hope, and when [s]he thought this would all continue to happen to [her], the suicidal ideation became more pronounced, and that is how [s]he ended up where [s]he was.”
As additional proof of the disparity of media coverage, if not bias, of “news” stories, CNN chose to quote two transgender experts, Dr. Michelle Forccier and Corinne Green, neither of whom are involved in the custody case.
CNN quotes and describes Dr. Forcier:
“’There is really strong data that says supporting an authentic child decreases future health risks,’ said Dr. Michelle Forcier, a pediatrician who is not involved in this case but works with transgender patients, some as young as 4 years old. She is also an associate professor of pediatrics at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.”
CNN describes and quotes Ms. Green:
“Corinne Green, policy coordinator for the Transgender Law Center, said ‘this is a really critical time in a child’s life, and it can be frustrating for the process to take so long to help him. There can be significant harm in delaying or withholding care of any kind.’ Her group is also not involved in the case.
“’If your child had asthma and was turning blue, you wouldn’t deny them their albuterol inhaler or say ‘let’s wait,’ Forcier said. ‘If this were cancer or diabetes, we wouldn’t be having this conversation, but people get funny when it comes to medical care when gender is involved, and that’s harmful.’”
Breitbart, conversely, discredits transgender activists:
“Like the abortion industry – which has adopted the narrative that abortion is ‘women’s health care,’ transgender activists are referring to prescribing hormone and surgical treatments for a gender-confused child as ‘transgender care.;”
Breitbart quoted Kaeley Triller, co-founder of Hands Across the Aisle Woman’s Coalition, who tweeted, “This is insane,” in response to the court’s ruling about the custody disputed teen.
“Triller’s organization consists of women from all points on the political spectrum who have joined together to challenge the narrative that gender is the equivalent of biological sex.”
Brietbart chose another expert, Dr. Michelle Cretella, president of the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) to offer her [Breitbart’s] view:
“’Many gender dysphoric children simply need therapy to get to the root of their depression, which very well may be the same problem triggering the gender dysphoria,’ Cretella continued, adding that, ‘even in Sweden, which is among the countries most accepting of LGBT individuals, adults who undergo sex change surgeries have a suicide rate nearly 20 times greater than that of the general population.’
“’Clearly, sex reassignment is not the solution to gender dysphoria,’ she wrote.”
The only thing that is clear to me is that neither CNN nor Breitbart is unbiased in their respective “news” stories and perhaps on the entire topic of transgender issues.
