Jelly Roll Reveals Why He Might Quit Music
Jelly Roll gave a candid backstage interview at the Grand Ole Opry in March that resurfaced this week — and in it the three-time Grammy winner said something that stopped country music fans in their tracks.
"Everything that Jason or Jelly Roll wanted to do in the music business, I've done now," he told Y'all Access Radio's Kelly Sutton. "So at this point, I really need to go talk to God and see if he wants me to stick around, or what he wants me to do next. If God tells me to go work at a homeless shelter in Paducah, Kentucky, I'm outta here, you know what I'm saying? Y'all will never see me again. He gave me everything I ever wanted, man, Grammys, ACMs, CMAs, I'm a member of the Grand Ole Opry. God has done it."
The 39-year-old born Jason DeFord won three Grammys in February, best contemporary country album for Beautifully Broken, best country duo for Amen with Shaboozey and best contemporary Christian music performance for Hard Fought Hallelujah with Brandon Lake.
He was also honored with the Country Radio Broadcasters' Artist Humanitarian Award. He filed for divorce from Bunnie Xo in May after a decade of marriage finalized in July. He said what came next felt open.
He is not announcing retirement. He is announcing something rarer, a willingness to walk away from everything he built if he believes he is supposed to.
