Holy cow, another year has come and gone: It’s time once again for AV’s annual Best of Buffalo readers survey of all that’s strange and wonderful (and not-so-wonderful) about our fair city and its surrounding burgs.

A generation ago, two creative and relentless Erie County legislators named Joan Bozer and Minnie Gillette led preservationists and educators on a successful mission to save the downtown post office building from the wrecking ball, and to turn it into the city campus of the county’s community college.

You can’t miss him. Amongst the glow of a dozen plasma screen televisions spilling out sports, the clinking of beer bottles, and the chatter of patrons, Dominic Paladino is omnipresent.

We’ve all thought about it, and some among us have even acted on it: Wouldn’t it be amazing to have our own bar or club right at home?

Quarters, beer pong, flip cup—boring. Winter is coming to an end and it’s time to get out of the house, but how can you leave the comfort of your couch, have some fun, and still get sloshed? There are plenty of options for those who want to be active and drunk.

I love South Buffalo, and Charlie O’s is South Buffalo through and through. Like so many joints up and down Seneca and South Park, or tucked away on the many streets that shoot off of them, it is a classic, no-frills, Irish-American tavern.

Many years ago, when I was an apprentice cook, I was one of a handful working under a chef whom we equally admired and feared. We admired him for his encyclopedic knowledge, leadership, and his interest in his young cooks. He was European and came of age during the Second World War, and regaled us with larger-than-life stories of his youth.

When the very serious illness of a family member made it imperative for Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Amberg Quartet flutist Betsy Reeds to travel out of state, the other members of the Amberg Quartet—clarinetist John Fullam, oboist/English horn player Paul Schlossman, and pianist Persis Vehar—had to make a decision about their upcoming performance in the Friends of Vienna concert series at the Unity Church this Sunday, March 13, at 3:30pm.

During the entire Regier tenure, the trade deadline usually meant the same thing. The Buffalo Sabres stand on the sidelines and watch other teams make the splashy moves to bolster their rosters, or sell off their castoffs to load up on precious draft choice slots.

New York University arts professor Wafaa Bilal had his camera surgically removed in February—the one that was implanted in the back of his skull in November to record, at 60-second intervals, the places he had left behind (beamed to and archived by a museum in Qatar).

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “Good things may come to those who wait—but they’re mostly just the things left behind by those who hustle and bustle.”

My girlfriend is a litterbug. This is driving me nuts because she’s really hot looking and fun and smart and I like her in every other way but it’s like she has this disorder. I’m not talking about dropping a gum wrapper on the sidewalk once. Let’s say she’s drinking a cup of coffee in the park. She’ll finish it and just drop the cup at her feet and walk away.
