The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for four draft picks, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday morning.

The Chiefs will receive the 29th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, a fifth-round pick, a sixth-round pick, and a 2027 third-round selection.

McDuffie is expected to sign a long-term contract extension with the Rams once the new league year officially opens March 11.

It is one of the biggest trades of the 2026 NFL offseason — and the reaction from Kansas City’s own quarterback said everything.

What Did Patrick Mahomes Say About The Trent McDuffie Trade?

“Damn,” Mahomes posted on X Wednesday morning.

Wide receiver Xavier Worthy echoed the sentiment, also expressing his emotions publicly after the blockbuster deal was announced.

The reaction went viral almost immediately, with fans and analysts pointing to it as proof of just how significant this loss is for Kansas City’s defense.

Who Is Trent McDuffie?

McDuffie, 25, was selected by the Chiefs with the 21st overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of the University of Washington. Over four seasons in Kansas City he developed into one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, a two-time All-Pro with a 90.2 career coverage grade per Pro Football Focus, the second-best mark in the entire league since 2022.

He recorded three interceptions, 34 passes defended, and 246 combined tackles across 56 starts. He was a key contributor to two Chiefs Super Bowl championships and part of three Super Bowl teams overall.

His final play as a Chief was an injury, he hurt his knee against the Houston Texans in a December game at Arrowhead Stadium and did not return for the rest of the season.

Why Did The Chiefs Trade McDuffie?

McDuffie was entering the final year of his contract after the Chiefs picked up his fifth-year option, which would have paid him $13.6 million in 2026.

Rather than commit to a long-term extension, general manager Brett Veach made the same calculation he has made before: cornerbacks are replaceable, draft capital is not.

It mirrors almost exactly what the Chiefs did in 2022 when they traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for five picks.

Before that, L’Jarius Sneed was moved under similar circumstances.

Veach operates on the belief that the Chiefs can find and develop defensive backs through the draft, and now, with the picks received from the Rams, Kansas City holds two first-round selections in April’s draft: picks 9 and 29 overall.

With Patrick Mahomes recovering from injury and Travis Kelce’s future uncertain heading into the offseason, the Chiefs are clearly in retooling mode.

What Does This Mean For The Rams?

For Los Angeles, this is the Rams being themselves.

General manager Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay have spent a decade trading picks for star players in an aggressive win-now approach.

They previously traded multiple first-rounders for Matthew Stafford. They acquired Jalen Ramsey the same way.

Now they add a plug-and-play All-Pro cornerback to a secondary that desperately needed upgrading, and McDuffie will be reunited with Rams assistant coach Jimmy Lake, who previously coached him at the University of Washington.

The Rams had two first-round picks in this year’s draft thanks to a prior trade with the Atlanta Falcons, which gave them the flexibility to move one without gutting their draft board entirely.

McDuffie immediately makes their defense better and signals that Los Angeles is all-in for a Super Bowl run during the Matthew Stafford era.

Cornerback had been the Rams’ most glaring need heading into free agency. They just solved it in one move.

For the Chiefs, the math is cold but familiar. McDuffie is an All-Pro. Kansas City chose to take the picks, trust the draft, and keep building.
