Lena Dunham is a mother. The Girls creator and her husband Luis Felber welcomed a baby girl via surrogate, the child arriving in August, Dunham revealed Wednesday in an essay for Vogue that was published alongside photos of the new family.

Dunham had a hysterectomy in 2017 due to endometriosis, removing her uterus, cervix and one ovary. She had long said she still wanted to be a mother. "Some people don't dream about being mothers, but I had, and it was a big part of my identity that I was going to do it someday," she said earlier this year.

The Vogue essay describes the birth in intimate detail. A midwife told Dunham to "talk to her" and "say hello" when her daughter arrived. "Hello," Dunham said. "I'm your mama. You look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We've been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come."

Dunham is 40. Felber is a British musician. They married in September 2021, with their relationship serving as the inspiration for the Netflix series Too Much, which Dunham created and which starred Meg Stalter. The baby's name has not been publicly shared.
