Polar Vortex Is Already Forming For 2026-2027 And A Super El Niño Could Disrupt It
Winter is still months away but the atmospheric setup for 2026-2027 is already drawing attention.
A new stratospheric polar vortex is forming over the North Pole, starting out stronger than average for mid-September, but long-range forecast models from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and the UK Met Office both show a significant weakening developing around mid-winter, likely January 2027.
The culprit behind that projected disruption is a developing Super El Niño in the tropical Pacific, an unusually powerful warming event that UN Secretary-General António Guterres said is being "supersized before our eyes" and that the World Meteorological Organization expects to persist through February 2027.
Strong El Niño events send atmospheric waves into the stratosphere that work against the polar vortex, reducing wind speeds, raising stratospheric pressure and temperatures, and sometimes triggering what meteorologists call a sudden stratospheric warming event in which temperatures spike by tens of degrees within days.
When the vortex weakens or splits, the cold air it normally keeps locked near the poles can escape southward, producing Arctic outbreaks across the US, Canada and Europe weeks later. That is the scenario forecasters are watching. It is not certain.
The exact timing and intensity of any stratospheric warming event is difficult to predict this far out. But three separate atmospheric signals, sea surface temperatures, stratospheric conditions and El Niño, are all pointing the same direction. If you like cold winters, the early read is encouraging.
