Roman Reigns Retains The WWE World Title Against Penta In Mexico City
WWE Raw came to Arena CDMX in Mexico City for the first time in 15 years Monday night — and the crowd made clear from the moment Roman Reigns' music hit that they were not here for the champion.
The boos were immediate, sustained and thunderous. Penta received a god-like ovation in his hometown. The champion walked in wearing a custom OTC lucha-style mask, absorbed the noise and never blinked.
What followed was the best match either man has had in months. Penta hit the Penta Driver, blocked a Spear with a superkick and landed two Mexican Destroyers,m each time the crowd erupted believing the title was changing hands.
Reigns kicked out of all of it. He grabbed a microphone mid-match and demanded the Mexico City crowd acknowledge him. They booed louder.
Penta superkicked him three times in response. Reigns answered with a Superman Punch off a springboard attempt and then a Spear to retain.
The crowd went completely silent at the final pinfall. Then they cheered Penta on his way out anyway, because he gave them everything he had.
Reigns has been champion since WrestleMania 41. Penta won an eight-man luchador tournament beating Laredo Kid, La Parka and his own brother Rey Fenix to earn the shot. Money in the Bank is October 10.
