'Ransom Canyon' Cancelled By Netflix
Netflix has canceled Ransom Canyon, the Texas-set romantic Western drama starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, after two seasons, Deadline reported Wednesday.
The cancellation comes despite the show's impressive performance: Season 1 spent four weeks on Netflix's Top 10 English-language TV list and reached the Top 10 in 77 countries, and Season 2 premiered July 23 to strong viewership.
The cancellation is the kind that stings, not a mercy kill of an underperforming show but a decision to end something audiences were actively watching. Duhamel and Kelly had both served as executive producers on Season 2 alongside creator, showrunner and EP April Blair, who built the show from Jodi Thomas's bestselling novel series.
Season 2 picked up six months after Season 1's events with Staten fighting to reclaim his family's legacy and Quinn deciding between New York and Ransom Canyon.
Blair had hinted after Season 2's renewal that there were still untold stories in Texas Hill Country. Those stories will now not be told.
Netflix did not give a reason for the cancellation. Ransom Canyon joins a growing list of streaming shows with strong viewership that nevertheless don't survive past two seasons, a frustrating pattern for audiences who invest in serialized storytelling.
