Trump Dividends Revealed: How To Get Your $5000 Check
President Trump made a major financial promise to voters at the Republican National Convention in Dallas Tuesday night, telling the crowd that if Republicans win both chambers of Congress in the November midterms, he will issue a $5,000 "Trump dividend" check to every adult American citizen.
"Because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000," Trump said. "Very much like a successful company will do a cash distribution to its shareholders."
He said the money must be spent inside the United States, not Canada, China or Germany, though he offered no explanation of how the government would enforce that requirement.
Vice President JD Vance told Fox News the money would at least partially come from tariff revenue. Senator Bernie Moreno posted that he would prepare a bill to pass the dividend "immediately" if Republicans win.
The price tag is staggering. With approximately 245 million adult American citizens, a $5,000 payment to each would cost roughly $1.22 trillion. No funding mechanism has been identified, no bill has been written and Congress has not authorized any payment.
This is not Trump's first dividend proposal. He had previously floated $2,000 tariff rebate checks in 2025, but that proposal stalled after the Supreme Court struck down key tariffs in February.
Those checks were never approved or issued. The $5,000 version faces the same fundamental question: Republicans currently trail Democrats by roughly 5 to 6 points on the generic congressional ballot heading into November.
