Alec Pierce Was Carted Off In The First Quarter With A Heel Injury In Colts' Loss
Alec Pierce made it through less than two minutes of Sunday night's game before his season was thrown into serious doubt again.
The Colts' top wide receiver, who signed a four-year $114 million deal in March and spent most of training camp on the PUP list recovering from left ankle surgery, reinjured that same left foot early in the first quarter against the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
Pierce was running a route when he cut right toward the sideline and lost his footing while changing directions. He hopped off the field unable to put any weight on the foot, was examined in the medical tent and then carted to the locker room before the second quarter.
He was ruled out at halftime. After the game he was seen walking out of Arrowhead on crutches with his lower left leg in a boot.
X-rays came back negative, which is the positive news. Further evaluation is scheduled Monday, which is where things stand.
The fact that the injury is to the same foot he had surgery on in March adds significant concern, reinjuring a recently operated surgical site raises the possibility of structural damage that an X-ray cannot detect.
Without Pierce, Laquon Treadwell stepped into a bigger role and caught three passes for 61 yards. The Colts lost 33-30 in overtime. They are 0-2 and now potentially without their best receiver.
