Bears' Caleb Williams Carted Off With A Hamstring Injury In 9-3 Loss
Caleb Williams had the Bears in scoring position with a chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter of Sunday's Week 2 game against the Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field, and then he went down.
On first-and-goal with 7:27 remaining and the Bears trailing 6-3, Williams scrambled left on a bootleg with a clear path to the end zone, appeared to have his heel clipped by Andrew Van Ginkel and collapsed awkwardly to the turf in a heap, writhing in pain. Van Ginkel said after the game he did not make contact. The injury appeared non-contact.
Williams could not put weight on his right leg as two Bears trainers helped him off the field. He was carted off with a towel over his head, then gave the crowd a thumbs up at the tunnel. Chicago ruled him out immediately with a right hamstring injury.
Backup Tyson Bagent took two snaps in the red zone, the Bears failed to score, Cairo Santos' field goal attempt was blocked and Chicago lost 9-3.
Coach Ben Johnson said Williams was in good spirits afterward, he was seen shaking teammates' hands in the locker room, and that the team would know more after an MRI Monday. Williams had thrown for a career-high 3,942 yards and 27 touchdowns last season en route to the Bears' first playoff appearance since 2020. Now Chicago holds its breath.
