Steve Belichick Resigns As North Carolina's DC After Investigation

Steve Belichick, 39, the son of North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick and the program's defensive coordinator since his father was hired in late 2024, has resigned, effective October 27 following the conclusion of his medical leave. He had been on leave since August 6.

The university announced the resignation Thursday alongside the conclusion of its investigation into the football program's culture and climate.

UNC's statement said the probe "determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina's values and standards of conduct" but called the actions "isolated in scope and not a systemic failure."

The university did not publicly specify findings or directly link Steve Belichick to any particular conduct. Sources told WRAL and ESPN that the 60-interview investigation included questions about potential drug use within the program and a purported sexual relationship between a female recruiting staff member and at least one UNC player.

General Manager Michael Lombardi had already resigned September 3 after being placed on paid administrative leave in late July following an HR complaint from a former employee. Lombardi's departure and the expanding probe had put increasing focus on Steve Belichick.

Bill Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach, is not mentioned in the investigation findings. UNC said Thursday it "continues to support Bill Belichick and the Carolina football program."

The Tar Heels are 2-0 heading into Saturday's ACC opener at Clemson.
