Tesla officially launched the Cybercab robotaxi for paying customers Thursday night, making the two-seat, steering-wheel-free, pedal-free autonomous vehicle available to the public for the first time through the Tesla Robotaxi app on iOS and Android.

The launch is real but limited. Rides are available in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa through the app, but the Cybercab option is only appearing in Austin, where Tesla is authorized to operate 45 of the vehicles commercially.

Riders cannot specifically request a Cybercab. What they get depends on group size and vehicle availability. "Hail your car and use it for errands, commuting and more," Tesla wrote on its website.

Early riders at what Tesla described as an exclusive closed launch event praised the performance of the advanced Full Self-Driving system, smoother and more capable than the version available in consumer vehicles.

A human customer service call center operates behind the scenes for redundancy, similar to how Waymo runs its service.

The Cybercabs currently operating are owned by Tesla. The company says it plans to sell them to fleet buyers in the future and is already taking inquiries.

The launch comes nearly two years after Elon Musk unveiled the Cybercab prototype at the "We, Robot" event in October 2024, where he promised volume production "before 2027." The first public rides make that promise technically real, if geographically small.
