Stefon Diggs Hugged The Goalpost After His First Commanders TD And The Penalty Cost Them The Game
Stefon Diggs scored his first touchdown as a Washington Commander with 10 minutes left in Sunday's fourth quarter, a 10-yard catch from Jayden Daniels that brought the Commanders within two of the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.
Washington was trailing 17-15 and at that point in the game the NFL's rules create an automatic two-point conversion attempt. Tie the game with one play. That was the plan.
Then Diggs hugged the goalpost.
He jumped onto it, wrapped himself around it, fell flat on his back in the end zone. The officials threw the flag immediately. Unsportsmanlike conduct. Fifteen yards.
The Eagles enforced the penalty on the ensuing point-after attempt, forcing Washington to kick the extra point from long range instead of going for two.
The score went to 17-16. The Eagles then drove for a touchdown to make it 24-16. The Commanders scored late and failed a final two-point conversion attempt. Final: Eagles 24, Commanders 22.
This is not the first time Diggs has been flagged for goalpost hugging, he did the exact same thing in 2017, was penalized 15 yards and fined $12,154. He is 32 years old and on his fifth NFL team. After the game he said simply: "It was dumb."
